LIV DAWSON OPEN YOUR EYES

Certainly one of the most promising 18-year-olds in music, Liv Dawson delivers another professional mature-beyond-her-years track in ‘Open Your Eyes’. It’s reassuring to see a teenage musician not falling into the trap of over-exposure as part of the hit machine, as we can hear, she’s strayed true to the sound we first fell for in debut ‘Tapestry’. That being said, the Surrey singer has made use of her new-found popularity to connect with Disclosure’s Guy Lawrence to produce her fourth release. It’s filled with those low-toned pulsations, sweeping synths and a certain je-ne-sais-quoi typical of a Disclosure work. However, it’s Dawson’s R&B style that’s the overriding flavour here. The steady tempo is perfectly timed to her steamy, textured vocal which addresses flaws in an ending relationship through the poignant lyrics co-written with Oz Moses. Her choices for collaborators have been spot on, expanding her horizons further in ‘Open Your Eyes’. If there wasn’t such a thing as a house R&B ballad before, there sure is now. - HT
